The Critique Handbook I found this essay very helpful in terms of approaching art critique with very structural fundamental questions. It breaks down step by step of the process of critiquing and trying to really investigate the intention of the work. But I must ask the meaning of the art work can be very subjective and has so many different layers. How validate it is to “critique” a work? It talked about the meaning of the work can easily shifted by you know more information about the work or less about the work. I thought about since it’s a visual work should viewer should get everything by just looking at the work pose to reading and research about the work? Three Crucifixes was an excellent example of comparison where body of work that can be interpreted into completely different meaning by having same content but different subject matter. I fully enjoyed this exhibition I thought it had so many component that was intriguing and have an exciting uses of technology. Really enjoyed all the interactive aspect of the exhibition and full engagement it requires for the viewer. I particularly fascinated with Foo and Skou ’s pieces; Birdprint , 2014 and   Format 3 where the pieces have a simple technology application of sound but beautifully executed. It touched on all 3 key senses “sight, sound and touch.” Also, as a graphic designer, I really appreciate all the graphic elements of the exhibition; wall graphics, information pamphlet and numbering etc... I thought it was beautifully curated. It had a great flow to floor to floor. Other work that stood out to me was Propagation (Opus 3) , 2015 by Naama Tsabar. How it occupied the whole wall space and how wires were organized to form a shape was a great visual elements to the work. James Elkins’s Why Art Cannot Be Taught discuss the history of art schools and how it has been changed for over course period of times. I find this article particularly interesting since I have a background of traditional art practice. I started my training of drawing and painting very early on and it was very much base on perfecting the technique. Working with still-life and exercising lines and how metarial works. It was interesting to read about the evolution of the art school starting from ancient to modern academies and the Bauhaus. I personally think art cannot be taught. There is something you born with that cannot be trained. You can inquire/learn the knowledge but it’s different thing when you are translating that into art. There is certainly sensibility that cannot be taught.
